Her win keeps Hunters in the race for points. It took the reigning Olympic champion and two-time World champion Carolina Marin to check the unexpected dominance of Delhi Dashers, and keep Hyderabad Hunters in the race for points in the Vodafone PBL.

Carolina Marin checks Delhi Dashers’ charge On the new year eve when the mood was the celebration, it was not easy to keep the fans in the stadium, but the sudden resurgence of Delhi added a dramatic twist to the script.

Powered by the Russian dynamos, Ivan Sozonov and Vladimir Ivanov, Delhi got off to a strong start, but Wing Ki Wong Vincent won the second match against Lee Hyun Ill who was playing as the trump for Hyderabad.

The way Lee Hyun Il was toying with his all-court crafty game, quite elegant as a left-hander, it was hard to visualize a revival for Vincent, who had lost some close matches. However, the manner of surrender was hard to comprehend.

In fact, Vincent took so much time to celebrate that Lee had walked away to grab his bag, and the umpire had to tell the Delhi player that he had to follow the basic protocol of shaking hands with his opponent after the match.

It was only the second point for Delhi within the tie, but it meant more, as Hyderabad, leading the table along with 2different teams currently with eight points, had a negative purpose for losing the trump match.

Thus, once Carolina Marin was all grace and poise, stinging repeatedly with venomous shots, Hyderabad might only nullify the disadvantage and reach zero, with the purpose gained through the Spaniard.

The tie was intriguingly poised with Sai Praneeth playing for Hyderabad against the only Chinese within the league, the former World No. six Tian Houwei as the trump, to be followed by the mixed doubles rubber.

The results: Delhi Dashers leads Hyderabad Hunters 2-0 (Ian Sozonov & Vladimir Ivanov bt Markis Kido & Yoo Yeon Seong 15-9, 15-11; Wing Ki Wong Vincent bt (T) Lee Hyun Il 13-15, 15-11, 15-4; Sung FTO Hyun lost to Carolina Marin 10-15, 12-15).

It took the reigning Olympic champion and two-time World champion Carolina Marin to check the unexpected dominance of Delhi Dashers, and keep Hyderabad Hunters in the race for points in the Vodafone Premier Badminton League at the Siri Fort Sports Complex here on Sunday.

Backed by wins from Olympic champion Carolina Marin and national champion Sameer Verma, the Hyderabad Hunters defeated Delhi Acers to enter the semi-finals of the Premier Badminton League in New Delhi on Thursday. The Hunters earned four wins from five matches to defeat the Acers 5-2 at the Siri Fort Sports Complex.

Saina Nehwal‘s Awadhe Warriors were the first to qualify for the knockout stage and Chennai Smashers and Mumbai Rockets also had joined them in the semi-finals but the door was still open for Hyderabad and they grabbed the last spot after toppling Bengaluru Blasters on Thursday.

Needing three points to earn a place at the semifinals, the Hyderabad team was led by Sameer, mixed doubles pair of Chau Wah Hoi and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and two-time world champion Marin, who took them home after winning their respective matches.

In the semifinals, it will be a mouth-watering contest when Saina’s Awadhe Warriors will fight against P V Sindhu’s Chennai Smashers while Hyderabad will face off Mumbai Rockets in a doubleheader at the Siri Fort Stadium in New Delhi on Friday.

Starting the proceedings, Sameer fought back from a game down to snuff aside the challenge thrown by young Siril Verma, a silver medallist at 2015 World Junior championship, 8-11 11-3 11-2 in the opening match.

Hong Kong’s Chau Wah and India’s Satwiksairaj then dished out a superlative performance to outclass the famed pair of Jwala Gutta and Russia’s Vladimir Ivanov 11-3 11-4 in mixed doubles to make it 2-0 in favor of Hyderabad Hunters.

China Open champion and World No. 2 Jan O Jorgensen then brought Delhi back into the contest with a dominating 11-5 11-7 win over 2010 Commonwealth Games silver medallist Rajiv Ouseph of England in their Trump Match to level the score 2-2.
